Trees Grow Roots Through the Air
In humid parts of Asia, banyan trees can send roots down from their branches and grow new trunks from them.
Fun fact: if you travel through Taiwan or Southeast Asia, you may see trees with roots hanging down from their branches.
These are aerial roots, and they can make a banyan tree look almost like something from Avatar. In humid climates, the roots can absorb moisture from the air while they hang above the ground. Once they reach the soil, they thicken into prop roots, helping support the tree’s spreading branches and absorb water and nutrients.
The tree is effectively growing new trunks from the air downward.
