The Downside of Settling Into a Routine

The days become harder to remember, even as our work and relationships grow stronger.

The downside of settling into a routine is that the days start to blur together.

  • When I look back on my favorite restaurant, I’ll always remember the first time I went there the most. The next visits blur together.
  • When I look back on starting a company, I’ll always remember the first week most. The next weeks blur together.
  • When I look back on a romantic relationship, I always remember how we first met more clearly than the second, third, or fourth time.

But that’s not always a bad thing.

It’s often in routine that we do our deepest work, cultivate our best habits, and develop our deepest relationships.

  • I’ll always remember the first visit most, but the next visits are how it became my favorite restaurant.
  • I’ll always remember the first week most, but it’s the next few weeks that make the company successful.
  • I’ll always remember how we first met most, but it was through the times we met afterward that we developed our love and a thriving relationship.

As we settle into routine, the days blur together, but what we’re building grows stronger.
