The case for "essay"
over "theme" or "thesis" or anything else.
In our recent class in ENGL 450 Daily Themes, Professor Ehrgood said that he much prefers to say “essay” than “thesis” or “theme”.
The reason is that “essay” is derived from the French word “essayer,” which means “to try.”
In the context of daily things, “to try” is the right word, as opposed to anything else. As in, I “essaie” a thought.
