Another Gear
Warmth alongside conviction and competence.
There’s something really admirable about people who are warm and easy to be around, but can flip a switch and show you how competent they are. You see it when they disagree with you, hold their ground, or start talking about something they know really well.
I’d want this in a negotiator. Someone who is friendly and calm, but can stand their ground when necessary.
Someone can be warm and accommodating without being easy to push around. When the time comes, they can say no, hold their ground, and let the conversation become uncomfortable.
They can listen, make concessions, and look for an agreement. But if someone keeps pushing, they can say, “No, that doesn’t work for us,” and be willing to walk away.
In a relationship, I want someone who is warm, but able to disagree with me. They can be loving and considerate while still saying, “I don’t think you’re right about that.”
I like a similar quality in people who are good at what they do. Someone is warm and easy to be around, but when it comes to their thing, a switch flips. You suddenly see how competent they are.
Sometimes they become more focused, direct, or intense when their ability is needed. Other times they stay just as warm, but you suddenly realize how much they know or can do.
I like people who are warm and calm, with another gear available when they need it.
